Batman: Caped Crusader finds new home on Amazon following HBO Max’s cancellation
Batman: Caped Crusader, an animated series based on the popular DC Comics character, is set to move to Amazon following its cancellation at HBO Max due to cost-cutting measures, according to The Hollywood Reporter. Amazon has ordered two seasons of the show, which is a reimagining of Batman mythology and aims to capture the style of the 1990s Batman: The Animated Series. The new show is being produced by Warner Bros. Animation, Bad Robot Productions, and 6th & Idaho, with a team of executive producers that includes J.J. Abrams, Matt Reeves, Bruce Timm, Sam Register, and Ed Brubaker.
The move to Amazon is seen as part of the company’s efforts to expand its streaming content, as it also develops new movies in the Lord of the Rings franchise. Warner Bros. Discovery, which owns the rights to Batman and other DC Comics properties, recently hired James Gunn and Peter Safran as DC bosses to oversee its various properties and develop a unified story across different media platforms.
While some projects, such as Matt Reeves’s The Batman: Part II and the HBO Max spinoff series The Penguin, are part of this unified plan, others like Batman: Caped Crusader will exist outside of the main track. The show’s 10-episode first season will feature writing by comic book writer Ed Brubaker.
Batman is one of DC Comics’ most popular characters, and the Caped Crusader has appeared in numerous comic books, TV shows, movies, and video games over the years. With the move to Amazon, fans of the character can look forward to seeing new stories and interpretations of the iconic hero in the coming years.
